Welcome to Pine Class!

We have a super learning team in year 5 and our staff are Mrs Collings (Monday – Thursday) and Miss Davenport (Friday) and our class teaching assistant is Mrs Fletcher.  In year 5 we are especially enthusiastic about discovering books together and learning through our reading.  

We build on the learning that children have already achieved in lower Key Stage 2 and move to developing the skills needed to be successful in this final phase of the Primary curriculum.  Children will work with increasing independence and confidence in Maths developing their ability to work with larger numbers and solve problems. In our English curriculum some of the engaging texts we will experience include epic Greek myths, adventure stories, narrative poetry and awesome inventions.

In Science in year 5 we cover the areas of Forces, Changing materials, the highly popular topic of Space, Lifecycles and Human Development.  Some highlights from our learning in the wider curriculum subjects include the history of Ancient Greece and the geography of rivers during which we will a field trip to study a local river.  We link learning in other subjects to our reading, the books we read together as a class and where possible to our creative subjects. 

How you can help?

Please support your child to keep reading at home.  It is important at this stage that you hear them read aloud during the week and discuss their book with them as well as encouraging them to develop their own personal reading habit.  Particularly discuss new vocabulary and the meanings of words that they come across in their reading. The children in year 5 have reading diaries that they keep in class to record the books they read.  There is no need to record home reading anywhere.  Each week a letter with some home learning options is posted on class dojo.  These are tasks related to the learning we are doing in class.
