About Us

Thurlbear CE VA Primary School is a seven class primary school in an idyllic setting in the hamlet of Thurlbear on the outskirts of Taunton. We are very proud of all that goes on here and as this website demonstrates the children at Thurlbear are supported in their learning by a dedicated team of staff, governors and parents.

We believe in working as a team, in partnership with parents, to ensure that each individual child’s time at this school is both happy and successful. The principle aim of our school is to provide an excellent education for our children in an atmosphere of mutual respect, confidence and celebration. As a team, we are committed to providing children with high quality and meaningful first hand experiences which develop our children into enthusiastic and dedicated learners.

Our School Vision

Our School Vision is to create an irresistible Church School; a beacon for learning experiences which lead to great life achievements.

Ethos Statement

The Christian foundation of the school ensures that the spiritual development of the children and Christian values have a particular emphasis within the whole life of the school. In accordance with the principles of the Church of England and in partnership with the Church at parish and diocesan level we aim to develop within our children not only an awareness of self and sensitivity to others; also the acquisition of a set of moral values and the confidence to make moral judgements and develop habits of self-discipline and acceptable behaviour. The school aims to serve its community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice.

Mission Statement

Our Christian Values are:

Thankfulness, Hope, Friendship Wisdom and Trust.

We are committed to nurturing the whole child, mind, body and spirit. With the help of parents we aim to encourage pupils to achieve high academic standards while taking responsibility for themselves and others. Achievement through working together in a Christian Community following the teaching of Jesus. The staff, parents and governors of Thurlbear CE VA Primary School work together to:

  • Nurture happy, confident and independent learners.
  • Inspire our children to attain their full potential. * Encourage attitudes of mutual respect and care.
  • Provide a curriculum that is broad, balanced, challenging and inclusive.
  • Foster a partnership between our school, families, church and community.

In that way we make Thurlbear the best possible place to learn, develop and achieve.

School Philosophy

We aim to provide an education for the ‘whole’ child. Such an education would both realize and appreciate their capabilities and talents, as well as academic achievements. To do this we provide a safe, happy, caring, well ordered environment in which children, teachers and parents all play their part. The school is a small community within a larger one. In any community the rights and freedoms of an individual are acceptable only if they do not infringe on the rights and freedoms of others. The Christian Foundation of the school underpins the values we promote. We have close links with our family of churches supported by Rev Joanna Porter from the Seven Sowers Benefice.
